Sweet Ride Hives also produces a small scale amount of fresh produce within Yellowknife, that is occasionally available at the Yellowknife Farmers Market.
Our current property contains about 400 sq. ft. of raised beds and a 65 sq. ft. greenhouse.
Depending on the location and amount of sun we focus on crops that do well in Northern climate, this includes carrots, beets, radishes, potatoes, green beans, leeks and wild onions. We also have a small crop of mix greens and peas.
Our greenhouse is dedicated to the production of tomatoes. Growing several different varieties during the 2019 season, we are testing out what varieties do well with a shorter and varied growing season. For the 2019 season, there are 35 tomato plants all currently producing fruit which start to ripen in August.
All of our plants are started directly from seed indoors between March and May and then transplanted. Throughout the summer we do frequent soil testing to ensure it is optimal for growth and production. We have even been known to make and use our own fish fertilizer from local fish scraps.
